Installation Time Factors

  • Scheduling – Richfield Blacktop’s paving crews are busy throughout the May-October paving season. Typically, you can expect us to get started from 2-4 weeks after you sign your estimate and contract with us to create your driveway. This time may vary. At the beginning and end of the season, we’re at our busiest, but during July and August, we may be able to get started more quickly. At the time of your estimate, we’ll be able to give you a good idea of the timing.
  • Tear-out and Sub-Base Preparation Phase – Most of our driveway projects are to replace an existing driveway. That means tearing out the old pavement and possibly excavating the old sub-base. In most cases, our crews complete this part of the process in only a day or two. Once the old driveway is gone, our crew turns to creating and compacting the new sub-base to the specifications decided on when the estimate was made. This work is normally done in a single day.
  • Paving Phase – Once the new sub-base is prepared, there may be a short delay before paving. This allows the sub-base to dry out completely. In some cases, we’ll pave your new driveway the same day or up to 10 days later. In other cases, it may be a week to 10 days before we can pave. Weather and scheduling issues can delay paving, along with other factors. We’ll let you know what to expect at all times, and will get the job done as quickly as possible.
  • Curing Phase – After your new driveway paving is completed, the newly laid asphalt will still be soft and shouldn’t have any traffic, although you can walk on it. For the next 3-5 days, you’ll keep all vehicles off the new asphalt. In very hot weather, that time may be extended. After that initial period, it’s OK to drive your car into the garage on the new driveway, but you shouldn’t park on the driveway for another few weeks. The full curing process takes up to two years. Richfield Blacktop will give you detailed instructions when the job is finished. Visit our Driveway Maintenance and Care page for more information.
